ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The Mainstream Coalition is dedicated to creating a more representative and responsive government by empowering informed participation and meaningful action in the political process. We envision a Kansas political system that represents all of its constituents. We are comprised of three affiliate organizations with distinct but complementary goals:

  • The Mainstream Coalition, founded in 1993, is a 501(c)(4) nonpartisan grassroots political organization. 
  • The Voter Network, founded in 1994 as the Mainstream Education Foundation, is our 501(c)(3) nonpartisan, charitable organization. Our mission is to create a culture of informed, civically engaged Kansans, particularly within underrepresented communities.
  • MainPAC, founded in 2008, is our nonpartisan political action committee. We directly support candidates and campaigns that align with our legislative priorities.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Mainstream Coalition is looking for a Manager of Public Policy and Strategic Communications (MPPSC) to join our team in early to mid June. The work is highly collaborative both within the organization as well as with other partners and external stakeholders. A successful MPPSC will be self-motivated and able to thrive in a dynamic environment with minimal supervision.

The MPPSC is responsible for communications and marketing strategy development/execution across all three affiliates; tracking the Kansas legislative session and translating the information into easy-to-understand content that is designed to be shared across platforms. They may represent the organization to the public and in relationships with external partners, policymakers, media and other stakeholders to maximize Mainstream’s presence and impact in realizing our advocacy and engagement goals. They will analyze and interpret state and local level policy and develop content for different audiences amplifying Mainstream’s message, advocacy, programs, and campaigns.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary function of this position is to serve as legislative liaison and administrator of strategic communications. Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the MPPSC will be responsible for:

  • Developing and executing strategies to promote and support the organization’s legislative, electoral, and programmatic work.
  • Tracking and reporting on policy activities, including legislative actions and policymaker engagement.
  • Supervising strategic communications and marketing activities for organization’s public policy agenda, and program expansion.
  • Creating content for various platforms while adhering to brand standards and policy statements, including public addresses, legislative testimony, program copy, media releases, etc.
  • Assisting with and supporting coordination of external advocacy efforts, outreach programs, committee work, and key initiatives.
  • Creating presentations and reporting on activities to ensure thorough communications.
  • Supporting the Executive Director and Voter Engagement Director in fund and resource development efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • An understanding of and belief in the missions, visions, and positions of the Mainstream Coalition, The Voter Network, and MainPAC.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Kansas political dynamics, including the legislative process and constituent engagement.
  • Ability to engage politically in a nonpartisan framework
  • Strong organization and time management skills with an ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and adapt in a fast-paced environment with limited daily supervision; including some nights and weekends.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills; demonstrated ability to effectively and comfortably interact with a wide array of diverse stakeholders.
  • Maintain highest personal levels of ethical conduct, confidentiality, and integrity.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and foster effective relationships and networks.
  • Willingness to pitch in when/where needed
  • Reliable transportation
  • Preferred, but not required:
    • Advocacy and/or electoral experience
    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • Multilingual

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

This is a full time, exempt position. Mainstream staff are primarily based in northeast Kansas, however this position is work from home and remote compatible. Some travel required, when safe. The compensation package is competitive with sector norms:

  • Annual salary: $39,000-$44,000, commensurate with experience
  • Health Reimbursement Account (QSEHRA)
  • Simple IRA, up to 3% employer match
  • Phone/internet stipend of $100/month
  • Mileage reimbursement (IRS rate) for travel outside of a 75-mile radius
  • Flexible work schedule and generous paid time off
