Now is the time to act.
Tell your Kansas Representative to oppose HCR 5005, and prevent Gov. Brownback from grabbing more power.
The Kansas House of Representatives will debate tomorrow on House Concurrent Resolution 5005, an amendment to the Kansas Constitution changing how Kansas Supreme Court judges are selected, giving the Governor the power to choose judges virtually unfettered. It would be the final nail in the coffin of the state government's checks and balances.
Stymied by the courts on everything from education financing to women's health, the Governor and his allies have determined that this is the only way for them to be rid of this last pesky barrier.
We must not let them. They need 84 votes in the House, or two-thirds of members. There are 97 members in the GOP caucus. We must sway them to oppose this attack on the separation of powers.
How to make yourself heard:
- Find your Kansas Representative at OpenStates.org
Tell them to oppose HCR 5005
- By email
- By phone
- Call the Legislative Hotline at 800-432-3924 and let them know there, too.
Do it tonight. Do it now. Do more than vote. Make a difference.
Thank you.
