Tomorrow begins the KS Legislature's veto session, the fast moving last days before they break for the year. This is their chance to push through anything that is still up in the air and take up any vetoes from the Governor. While we're still waiting on action for a couple bills we're concerned about, we are thrilled to share that the Governor vetoed HB 2311!
A quick reminder - this bill would prevent the Department of Children and Families from creating policies that protect LGBTQ+ children from being placed in households that hold extreme religious beliefs regarding sexual orientation and gender identity. It would allow those foster parents to "guide or instruct" queer children consistent with these religious beliefs. We believe this is an open door to subjecting children to harmful anti-gay rhetoric and programming, like conversion therapy.
Let's be clear, this bill is not about religious freedom. It's about imposing religious extremism onto vulnerable Kansas kids. It's about prioritizing religious beliefs over the well being of our children. It's about creating a narrative that Christians are being discriminated against when we simply are trying to hold them accountable when extremists put their narrow religious doctrine above the rights of all Kansans. This bill is about their ability to discriminate and harm LGBTQ+ children.
Please take a minute tonight to email or call your legislator and ask them to sustain the Governor's veto on HB 2311. You can find your legislator here.
You can also join us tonight for our LGBTQ+ phonebank. We'll be joining our statewide partners to call people in select districts and ask them to contact their legislators to stop HB 2311. You can sign up here.
Thank you for doing your part to protect vulnerable Kansas kids!
