People call the months in the run up to an election the "silly season," because of all the outlandish tactics, stunts, and events that candidates and their supporters roll out to sway voters. But that term is too trite this year. In the balance in 2016 is no less than the future of Kansas.

Two weeks until the Kansas primary elections. There's not a lot more to be said at this point. August 2nd is the first chance we have to change the direction of politics in Kansas. You're already planning on voting. But if you really want to see change, we need to get a lot more people voting.

"Freedom" is a curious word. It can mean a lot of things, and gets claimed by both sides in an argument that has lasted since well before the American Revolution we celebrate on the 4th of July. To some, it is the opposite of oppression, to others, the seed of anarchy. The truth, of course, lies somewhere in the middle.

The good news, and it really is good news, is that the Kansas public schools will not be closed on July 1. The Kansas Legislature worked for two days in a remarkably civil fashion and came up with a fix that had no strings attached, no add-on disasters, no extra baggage to weigh it down.

On Thursday, June 23rd, the Kansas Legislature will be coming into special session, to muster the courage and leadership to produce a constitutional school finance plan. The State of Kansas has been in legal hot water for more than a decade regarding how they finance public education, and it is fair to say that at least one portion of it has come to a head.

This is testimony delivered by MainStream today, opposing efforts to amend the Kansas Constitution to hamstring the impartiality and fairness of the Kansas Supreme Courts.

Last Fall, with an eye towards what we knew would be a critical election year, we secured funding to develop and implement a get out the vote project. With those funds, coupled with the generous donations of our members and supporters, we have spent the year preparing to launch a set of new initiatives to make a difference in Kansas.

Even though the Legislature met for only part of one day last week—to declare their business done while leaving it decidedly undone—we had a full week of big news. Between the transgender discrimination resolution, $70 million of missed revenue, and the looming shadow of an unconstitutional school funding plan, one columnist called it a "Full Kansas Meltdown."

Tomorrow, June 1st, is "Sine Die" in the Kansas Legislature. In Latin, it means "without a day," and in terms of the Legislature, it indicates the last day of a session, adjourning without a day for a planned return. Usually a formality, and sparsely attended, this year the Legislature will attempt some posturing on transgender bathrooms. Already we have reports that they will not address the biggest issue before the state, constitutional funding of our public schools.
